Oscar Noms Are In

The movies and performances that have been jostling to be given little gold men have finally lined up to be counted. The 2017 Oscar nominations are in. You can see the full list here, but we’ll cover some of the highlights below:

Best Picture: Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight. We’ve only managed to show two of these so far (Arrival and Hell or High Water, but most of the others are on the list of those we’re trying to book as soon as we can–but it’s likely to be after Oscar season for a few of them).

Best Actress: Isabelle Huppert in Elle, Ruth Negga in Loving, Natalie Portman in Jackie, Emma Stone in La La Land, and Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins.

Best Actor: Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea, Andrew Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge, Ryan Gosling in La La Land, Viggo Mortenson in Captain Fantastic, and Denzel Washington in Fences.

That’s a lot of love for La La Land, and it’s deserving–a turn back to the old school musicals with Fred & Ginger, Gene Kelly, and Frank Sinatra. We’ll get La La Land as soon as we can, but probably not until March or maybe even April.

There’s a little more diversity in the Best Supporting categories, with Mahershala Ali, Jeff Bridges, Lucas Hedges, Dev Patel, and Michael Shannon nominated among actors, and Viola Davis, Naomie Harris, Nichole Kidman, Octavia Spencer, and Michelle Williams nominated among actresses.

Best Animated Feature Film is going to be a tight race, with Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life with Courgette, The Red Turtle, and Zootopia in the running.

And as usual, it’s in costuming, sound, and visual effects that the genre films start to show up, with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Star Trek Beyond, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Doctor Strange, and even Suicide Squad showing up. But still no Deadpool, even in the genre-heavy categories.
