What’s a Take-a-Chance Movie?

Every once in a while a movie comes along that sort of flies under the radar. Maybe the ad budget was too low, or the stars weren’t “star-y” enough, or the film opened opposite Harry Potter and got lost. Sometimes it’s just a movie that the marketers can’t explain in one sentence, or one that doesn’t appeal to the 18-30 male demographic that most studios aim for.

Often that movie appeals to us, though. And it usually has appealed to the critics as well. We’ve shown some Take-A-Chance Movies here over the years that our more adventurous patrons have just loved, films like Beasts of the Southern Wild, My Afternoon with Marguerite, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Sound of Noise, Particle Fever, Pride, and As It Is in Heaven.

You might not like the movie, of course—that’s the “chance” involved. But, really, what do you have to lose?

Clyde policy has always been that if you choose or need to leave a movie within 15 minutes of its start, we’ll give you a pass to return at another time or for another film. Just stop at the snack bar on your way out and ask for one. It doesn’t work to ask for a pass as the end credits roll, but if you realize early on that the movie’s not for you, we’re happy to make sure you haven’t wasted your money.

So when both critics for the New York Times (among others) pick Beyond the Lights as a film well worth seeing,  why not take a chance and check it out? It plays this Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the 7:30 shows.

I loved last Friday’s matinee. The time is perfect for me, as i get off work at 1PM.

I’m not going today because of the movie: I don’t appreciate animation, but I hope you continue having the matinees, and I’ll surely attend if the movie is of the caliber as “Pride”.

    Thanks
    Cherie

I love that you guys play some Indie Films, but maybe you could try to select a bit more of the Horror genre . Maybe some Indie horror flick, or even a box office horror film, it just seems like the clyde is lacking in the spooks! btw, the Babadook came out a while ago, it’s an australian indie horror movie that got 100% from critics but wasnt played in many theatres, it would have been perfect for the clyde!

Nick–If people came to well-made scare-fests like The Babadook, we’d show them, but horror movies just don’t generate any business for us. We try a good one now and then, but no one comes to see them.

  3. How about All She Wishes. My friends/ co-workers in Mill Creek wrote the screenplay and its out On Demand now. Its a great family movie.

I read the Take-A-Chance movie note. I saw “Pride” and loved it but missed the others… would love to see “Beyond the Lights”. The posting read like the movie would play this week-end but instead, Will Smith has the spot light.

It’s an old blog post, Carol, but it does explain the concept of a Take-A-Chance Movie. We have 2 of them coming up soon, the Oscar-nominated Argentine revenge comedy WILD TALES this TWTh (April 28-30)and the musical documentary SEYMOUR: AN INTRODUCTION the following week (May 5-7). I’ll try to remember to always include dates on any blog posts to avoid reader confusion.

By all means take a chance on 100 YEAR OLD MAN!
Saw it in Jan. and thought I wouldn’t like it as much as the book but it is a riot.
