language throughout and sexual material

Oscar Winner Olivia Coleman and Oscar Nominee Jessie Buckley play neighbors in a quaint 1920s town torn apart by a rash of vulgar letters posted to people about town. Buckley’s Irishwoman is blamed for the scandal because she’s a hard-drinking, hard-cursing, fun-lover, and the male constables seem quite certain it’s her. But one of the few female members of the constabulary isn’t quite so sure, and begins to investigate herself with the help of some of Edith’s friends. What they find is shocking, but true to the actual history of the incident. While critics have given it a perfectly comfortable 80% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, it glories in a 92% Audience Score there.

“The matchup of Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman produce hilarious, go-for-broke acting fireworks in Thea Sharrock’s irresistible charmer set in a 1920s English village.” -Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News
“A very funny little British comedy that I cannot believe was inspired by a true story.” -Amy Nicholson, FilmWeek (KPCC – NPR Los Angeles)
“It’s a little story, but it’s wicked fun.” -Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times
“Colman and Buckley know how to make this material sing, and there are moments when both actors managed to make me squeeze out an authentic tear or two, only to have me enthusiastically giggling a scene or two later.” -Sarah Michelle Fetters, MovieFreak.com
Wicked may take great pains to recreate the musty Britain of the 1920s, but don’t be fooled by the cloche hats and frilly frocks. The female rage that powers every frame of this comedy didn’t go away when that decade ended.” -David Fear, Rolling Stone
“The range of insults sprinkled in with a healthy dose of f-bombs is truly awe-inspiring. The letters are spicy for the villagers, but for a modern-day audience, they’re just delightfully silly.” -Kaely Monahan, Arizona Republic
“Whether itching for suffrage or to say whatever filthy fucking thing that springs to mind, rebellion is in the air, and it gives this likably goofy whodunit a light tang of the subversive.” -Kimberly Jones, Austin Chronicle
Wicked Little Letters is for people who like British comedy, but also for people who think British comedies are too refined for their taste. This one isn’t.” -Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
“Mean tweets 1920 style: The incomparable Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley turn a flimsy script about poison pen letters that turn friends against each other into irresistible fun. Any resemblance to today’s internet trolling is purely intentional.” -Peter Travers, ABC News

Wicked Little Letters opens at The Clyde on Friday, May 17, and plays at 7:30 Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
