She’s the He

Raunchy - sex-related jokes and gags, language

There have been rumors about Alex and Ethan being gay all through high school, and in a last-ditch effort to quash them before graduation, they decide to come out as trans women. It’s an apocryphal scare-tactic story or your pretty standard teen raunchy comedy… until Ethan discovers that she really is trans. It’s a movie by trans people for all people, with both trans and cis actors throughout, and from everything we’ve read, it’s funny, it’s enlightening, it’s sweet, and it has some meaning right now when trans people are being made the scapegoats for so many problems in our country. It has a 100% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.

“It feels like an old-fashioned high-school flick about friendship, but one that has new ideas. It’s the rarest of skills, making something new out of something old.” -Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert.com
“The film’s endearingly scrappy creation has something worth saying: If the world won’t make a place for you, make one for yourself.” -Chris Azzopardi, New York Times
“She’s The He is goofy, but relevant, opting to push traditional teen comedy tropes into an ultimately LGBTQ positive film, embracing that sometimes you don’t know until you’ve walked a mile in someone else’s shoes, and sometimes those shoes have heels.” -John Stark, Mac the Movie Guy
“While people will come to She’s the He for the high school comedy, they will find themselves moved by the human story of two teenagers trying to find themselves.” -Amelia Harvey, Movies We Texted About
“She’s the He is a successful attempt at not just carving out a space for LGBTQ identity amidst the overbearingly heterosexual narrative tropes, but also bending those tropes so they can fit into a tale of trans awakening, not the other way round.” -Alistair Ryder, Vague Visages
“Amongst all the innuendo, gross-out gags, and a satirical depiction of transgender fearmongering that’s fittingly accompanied by the camp anthem Time Warp, McCarthy delivers a tremendously touching coming-of-age comedy about friendship and identity.” -Andrew Murray, The Upcoming
“a sharp, funny, and tender exploration of identity, self-expression, and gender in society” -Liselotte Vanophem, Geek Vibes Nation
“The quick-witted film with a majority trans cast checks off the high school movie tropes, including makeover scenes, a blooper reel, and raunchy jokes, while creating tender moments.” -Robin Edwards, The Stranger

She’s the He comes out at The Clyde on Tuesday, June 23, and plays Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:30.
