Steven Spielberg proves once again that he absolutely knows how to make a gorgeous movie. Emily Blunt stars as a Kansas City meteorologist who suddenly begins speaking in an alien language on live TV, and finds herself in the center of an attempt by a shadowy government contractor to keep secret the revelation of extraterrestrial contact. It’s a flashy film about a conspiracy with some serious messages beneath it about the interconnectedness of us all, the importance of curiosity, and how to take a leap and believe.
“Disclosure Day is classic Spielberg popcorn – it has heft, sure, but it is mostly about being along for an entertaining ride.” -Wenlei Ma, The Nightly (AU)
“Spielberg’s vision in Disclosure Day suggests audacity, even recklessness, two qualities that have often been wanting in his movies. There’s a sense of freedom, of a work pulled from deep within.” -Richard Brody, The New Yorker
“Emily Blunt amazes in a new Spielberg alien close encounter that probes his classic earlier work without deepening it. Lucky for us, the master still hasn’t forgotten how to deliver full-body chills that knock you sideways.” -Peter Travers, The Travers Take
“The film’s a marvel—the editing tight and crisp yet never unnecessarily flashy, the special effects well done but not overdone, and the cinematography from Spielberg reg Janusz Kaminski playing to the unsettled times in which they are set.” -Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News
“His highly anticipated return to the sci-fi summer blockbuster, the brilliant and beguiling Disclosure Day, is Spielberg’s most shameless appeal toward idealism yet.” -Coleman Spilde, Salon.com
“It rewards rewatching to appreciate the bigger concepts, the vital importance of fearless curiosity, and above all, no matter how much our fragile hearts try to resist, the central purpose of finding understanding and connection.” -Nell Minow, Movie Mom
“Spielberg’s story isn’t conspiratorial. It’s a spectacular tale about what we see, what we hear, and how both can change what we believe and how we treat each other. By the final frame of this beautiful, immersive film, you realize it’s a plea.” -Gene Park, Washington Post
“A summery sci-fi thriller, and a close encounter with classic-era Spielberg.” -Rafer Guzman, Newsday
“This thrilling film is all about its questions, not its answers. That is the mark of a true elder statesman’s wisdom.” -Odie Henderson, Boston Globe
“Spielberg’s fascination is not with the possibilities of alien diplomacy. It’s with our emotional possibilities as human beings, of our ability to be astonished, and to let that astonishment speak to the best of ourselves.” -Richard Whittaker, Austin Chronicle
“The actors are a joy. I hadn’t realized that I’ve long wanted to see Colman Domingo and Colin Firth face off, their velvet voices creating dusky music; sometimes movies give you unanticipated gifts.” -Moira MacDonald, The Seattle Times
“Does it matter if you believe in the possibility of alien abduction, or redemption? Not at all. Just believe in Spielberg’s ability to entertain, and Blunt’s to deliver a star turn.” -Thelma Adams, AARP Movies for Grownups
