Digger

October 16-19 | Friday-Monday | 2 hours, 9 minutes | Rated R |

pervasive language

Tom Cruise has never looked so… unlike himself. He plays Digger, a Texas oilman with more money than God, more power than the President—and a little trouble with some of his oil projects up in the Arctic that eventually involve drifting ice the size of a small country and nuclear weapons. There’s a whole lot more to it than that, but do if you like whacky movies, do yourself a favor and don’t look up too much more, because there’s a twist that will make it better if you go in relatively blind.

Language warning on the trailer, there are a couple of F-bombs.

“Digger plants its feet, drives its shovel into the ground, and strikes oil.” -Adam Graham, Detroit News
“Subtle? Nope. Mordantly funny and wildly surprising? Definitely. Some will find its ‘I’m a bit mad, me’ energy exhausting. I lapped up every bonkers moment.” -Philip De Semlyen, Time Out
“Tom Cruise, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s big, clever, and very funny apocalyptic satire is our Dr. Strangelove. Similarities to the 1964 Stanley Kubrick–Peter Sellers classic can be found just about everywhere; And the joke is still on us.” -Tim Cogshell, Art Film Guide
“What should be talked about is Cruise’s spectacle of a performance. He’s better here than even in his great turn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia. That is saying a lot.” -Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News
“Iñárritu’s technique transcends gimmickry. The sense of a continuous, organic form, which he chased so aggressively in Birdman, springs to life here in all manner of unintended ways.” -Justin Chang, The New Yorker
“It’s a better film than some people will claim; tense, yes, but rewarding, and far more captivating than any conventional blockbuster.” -Linda Marric, HeyUGuys
“What makes the film great, or near great, is its hugeness of aspiration. Iñárritu is trying to make the ultimate statement about our time. He can’t possibly succeed completely, but he takes a big swing and makes serious contact.” -Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
“Cruise has played arrogant bastards before, but this is one of his better turns, right up there with those in Tropic Thunder and Magnolia.” -Peter Howell, Toronto Star
“Screw jumping off mountains, satirizing the men in charge with this level of viciousness feels like the biggest risk of Tom Cruise’s career. But it pays off brilliantly.” -Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence
“An unrecognizable, Oscar-ready Tom Cruise is eager to show what he’s got as a paunchy, preening, tantrum-throwing Texas oil powerbroker. He’s got plenty.” -Peter Travers, The Travers Take
“Audacious, risky, terrific fun and — for at least half the planet — the wildest ride you’ll get this year.” -Nick Howells, London Evening Standard

Digger explodes at The Clyde on Friday, October 16 and plays Friday, Saturday, Sunday, & Monday at 7:30.
