Crime 101

March 13-16 | Friday-Monday | 2 hours, 20 minutes | Rated R |

language throughout, some violence, and sexual material/nudity

Chris Hemsworth headlines this film as Mike, a gentleman jewel thief who meticulously plans heists where no one gets hurt and there’s no DNA evidence left behind. When he passes on one job, however, his usual fence hires an unstable and violent thief to do it instead, and then to track him down to find out what his next heist will be. This leaves Mike trying to evade the new thief and an LAPD detective tracking him down, all while trying to convince an underappreciated insurance broker to help him, and to find out if he has a chance to settle down and actually find love. It’s a twisty, exciting heist movie in the style of the classics of days gone by, with a star-studded cast (Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, and more). It currently has an 88% Tomatometer and an 85% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.

“This is a special movie. It has a life force unlike any other crime thriller I’ve seen. It’s about characters who suffer a personal failure but emerge transformed.” -Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.com
“It’s much better than it has any right to be. You’ve already seen Heat a thousand times. You can take one night off and watch this instead.” -David Fear, Rolling Stone
“It’s refreshing to see a grown-up big-screen thriller this well crafted — and one that cares for its grounded characters and their predicaments.” -Phillip de Semlyen, Time Out
“The action is pleasingly sure-footed: A car-and-motorcycle chase in L.A. by night is a jump-inducing thrill ride.” -Glenn Kenny, AARP Movies for Grownups
“Chris Hemsworth leads a starry cast in a heist drama that fascinates even through a veil of familiarity. Near the end, a standout Halle Berry flashes a smile of sweet satisfaction. My guess is that you’ll feel the same way.” -Peter Travers, The Travers Take
“Three people under increasing pressure find their stories intersecting in a tense, old-school crime drama” -Nell Minow, Movie Mom
“Crime 101 is often smart, ultimately ridiculous, and mostly absorbing.” -G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle
“a confident, intelligent crime thriller driven by strong performances and a director who clearly trusts his audience. It’s stylish without being showy, thoughtful without becoming inaccessible.” -Linda Marric, HeyUGuys
“Taken as a thriller, “Crime 101” has its indulgences, but by the end it can stand as an advanced course in what underworld dreams are made of.” -Owen Gleiberman, Variety
“The film is manifestly aware of its ancestors, among them the Michael Mann canon, Walter Hill’s The Driver and the Steve McQueen titles that are prominently namechecked. That’s some calibre; Crime 101 pretty compellingly measures up to it.” -Jonathan Romney, Financial Times
“A highly watchable spectacle, leaving a sizzling streak of rubber on the tarmac.” -Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
