March 14-17 | Friday-Monday | 2 hours, 19 minutes | Rated R |
Fresh off its 5 Oscar wins (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing) plus one additional nomination for Best Supporting Actor, Anora will have a chance to dazzle at The Clyde. The story of a stripper caught up in a whirlwind relationship with the son of a Russian oligarch, it’s raw and sharp and funny and sweet and hard and everything else a good film should be. There’s a rushed marriage, complications with family, demands for an annulment, chaos, and a resolution too bittersweet for the film to fully be a rom-com, even if it’s quite funny throughout. In addition to all of its success at the Academy Awards, Anora won the prestigious Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival as well. It currently has a 93% Tomatometer and an 89% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
“I know you won’t believe it’s as good as everyone is saying it is until you hear it from me so here you are: yes, it’s as good as everyone is saying it is.” -Deborah Ross, The Spectator
“It’s a rollercoaster ride, yet Baker never confuses movement with action. Every twist takes you somewhere you hadn’t quite expected to be, revealing an emotion you hadn’t expected to share.” -Sandra Hall, Sydney Morning Herald
“Anora isn’t a fairy tale that plays by the rules of Prince Charmings and happy endings. Instead, it thankfully explores something more real: people just trying to get through the day with some sense of hope and human connection.” -Brian Tuitt, USA Today
“At once a frenzied fairy tale and a tender-hearted character study, Anora is an intoxicating pairing of director and star. Baker’s unique, humanistic approach to filmmaking is as riveting and rewarding as ever.” -Beth Webb, Empire Magazine
“Yet again, Sean Baker nails it. Anora somehow straddles a fine line as the year’s funniest and most heart-wrenching movie.” -Maxwell Rabb, Chicago Reader
“Anora is a small film that feels much larger, elevated by humour, chaos, and human tenderness.” -Clarisse Loughrey, Independent (UK)
“Madison uses her liquid eyes and wary, rubbery smile not to win us over a la Julia Roberts but to show how Ani sheds her illusions and comes to understand both her own power and the larger powerlessness of a working woman in a world run by men and boys…” -Ty Burr, Washington Post
“It’s lush, it’s electrifying, it’s wild. But more than that, the movie has real heart.” -Amanda Luberto, Arizona Republic
“It’s a crowd-pleaser, funny and sexy and raucous, while also being startlingly wise and tender.” -Dana Stevens, Slate
Anora comes to The Clyde Friday, March 14, and plays Friday, Saturday & Monday at 7:30, plus Sunday at 2:00.
