Good Fortune

Keanu Reeves is picture-perfect as an earnest angel usually assigned to help people not text-and-drive, who now takes in guiding a lost soul to a revelation. That revelation is supposed to be that the rich have it hard too, but when he swaps Aziz Ansari’s gig-economy grinder Arj and Seth Rogan’s tech bro Jeff… that’s not the lesson that Arj learns. Sandra Oh co-stars as the angel’s boss angel, and Keke Palmer as Arj’s former co-worker and current crush. It’s fun, it’s sweet, and it has an 88% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.

(Warning, there’s one F-bomb in the trailer)

“Ansari fortunately has crafted a mature comedy that gives audiences a chance to both laugh and think.” -Brian Truitt, USA Today
“Reeves is so funny, so sublime, and so f—ing spot-on in his portrayal of a do-gooder whose genius plan goes off the rails that he ends up slipping the movie into his Constantine-style overcoat pocket and walking away with it.” -David Fear, Rolling Stone
“Mr. Ansari not only engineers up-to-the-minute twists on the musty Hollywood angel movie, but decorates his story with clever dialogue and wicked observations about street-level existence in the City of Angels.” -Kyle Smith, Wall Street Journal
“Good Fortune is a charming debut.” -Stephanie Zacharek, TIME Magazine
“It’s impressive how many hot button issues Ansari, making his directorial debut, packs into 98 minutes, especially while keeping the laughs coming.” -G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle
“A smart, fresh, and funny take on the switched lives fantasy that has some punch in its depiction of the gig economy, the people who struggle with it and the people who profit from it.” -Nell Minow, Movie Mom
“Summoning those deadpan days of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Parenthood, Reeves’ determined but out-of-his-depths Gabriel consistently scores as the film’s comedic secret weapon.” -Michael Rechtschaffen, Hollywood Reporter
“Ansari’s direction makes for a no-fuss affair that might feel just functional if it didn’t have such spirit — the spirit being very much that of 1930s-’40s screwball comedies…that addressed real social issues with the lightest, crispest touch.” -Jonathan Romney, Financial Times
“A blistering barrage of jokes backed by immense heart, Good Fortune is a surprising gift.” -Robert Daniels, Screen International
