This story of life is told in reverse, starting from the moment of the end of not only life, but the universe. Working backward, it explores joy and belonging and loneliness and dance and just… living life, and it does it backwards. It’s an adaptation of a Stephen King story, and filled with spectacular performances by Tom Hiddleston, Chiwitel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mark Hamill, and Jacob Tremblay (who already has an Emmy and was the youngest-ever nominee for Best Supporting Actor at the Screen Actor Guild Awards). The film currently has an 88% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
“It’s an unexpected emotional wallop that knocks you off your feet. “The Life of Chuck” pricks the soul like that even as it warms our aching hearts.” -Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News
“While it includes dark and tragic themes, it is a story of profound humanity, ultimately spirit-expanding.” -Nell Minow, MovieMom
“This film feels like the coziest of blankets enveloping you in the theater. However, you should expect a few jolts of static electricity as you snuggle into that blanket. After all, this touching, beautiful film is based on a novella by Stephen King.” -Odie Henderson, Boston Globe
“‘The Life Of Chuck’ is a near-faithful cinematic adaptation which aims at giving us the warm fuzzies-in-this-dark-and-dismal-world, and succeeds” -Shubhra Gupta, The Indian Express
“Lovingly adapted from Stephen King’s novella of the same name, The Life of Chuck was written and directed by Mike Flanagan, for whom the material is so well suited that King might as well have written it for him.” -Steven D. Greydanus, Decent Films
“The Life of Chuck isn’t a movie with answers, but it’s a movie with compassion and understanding, which we can definitely use.” -Kristen Lopez, The Film Maven
“It’s so endearingly sincere that only the hardest of cynics won’t be won over by the uplifting, earnest depiction of the complex universes- of the multitudes- within each and every one of us.” -Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting
“This is one of the best ensembles of the year, filled in with appearances by many of Flanagan’s past collaborators.” -Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
“A film that’s as sweet as it is scary, and whose frights are the sort that come from all-too-relatable fears about being alone, being apart, and being unable to hold onto the people and memories that matter most.” -Nick Schrager, The Daily Beast
The Life of Chuck opens at The Clyde on Friday, July 11, and plays Friday, Saturday, Sunday, & Monday at 7:30.
