August 1-4 at least | Friday-Monday | 2 hours, 9 minutes | Rated PG-13 |
We all know who Superman is. This may be the most faithful adaptation of the character yet: a Kansas Farmboy — despite his alien origins — who believes in the good in people and in doing not just the right thing, but doing it the right way. It’s a ray of hope in the midst of hard times… just like Superman is supposed to be. This film sees Superman struggling with what it means to be a man above nations, to work with other superheroes, and to interact with humanity as a whole. The cast is picture-perfect, from David Corenswet as Superman himself to Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane to Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern. Despite attempts at review-bombing by people upset that the film acknowledges that Superman is literally an undocumented alien, it currently has an 83% Tomatometer and a 92% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
“It makes you want to cheer. That’s it, that’s the secret ingredient that’s been missing from so many superhero stories for so long.” -Glen Weldon, NPC
“Gunn delivers a fun, goofy, irreverent, and heartfelt motion picture overflowing with empathy and kindness.”-Sarah Michelle Fetters, MovieFreak.com
“It is genuinely heartening to see a movie this massive refuse to shy away from how divided and broken our world is.” -Coleman Spilde, Salon.com
“It is a restarting and a return to the sort of visual style of the Richard Donner’s Superman from the ’70s that we all loved.” -Mark Kermode, Kermode and Mayo’s Take
“this kind-spirited two-hour-long romp works as a corrective to the increasingly bloated and self-serious comic-book movie as we’ve come to know it.” -Dana Stevens, Slate
“…Gunn’s big swings with this movie aren’t merely about sticking it to anti-immigrant bigots, and it would be a mistake to overstate its seriousness. But like his golden age roots of truth and justice,…this Superman also stands for something bigger…” -Esther Zuckerman, Bloomberg News
“This is the funniest superhero movie I have seen and the good news is the humour is deliberate. It’s also action-packed, visually spectacular, has decent twists and is full of knockout performances…” -Stephen Romei, The Australian
“It’s a shrewdly balanced film, a mix of flippant merriment and real dramatic stakes. Gunn would have a much harder time selling his new approach had he not cast smartly. Fortunately, he’s found an appealing Kal-El/Clark in TV actor David Corenswet.” -Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair
“This Superman is, more than anything, concerned with our society’s struggle to accept the possibility of inherent goodness. The result is an optimistic movie, one that sees a hopeful way forward for both Superman and the world’s other caped men and women.” -David Sims, The Atlantic
Superman will open at The Clyde on Friday, August 1, and play at least Friday, Saturday, Sunday, & Monday.
