The legendary band Spinal Tap returns to the big screen in this long-awaited sequel to the beloved Christopher Guest mockumentary. The band is reuniting after 15 years for one more show, but they still need a drummer (all of theirs have died, usually spectacularly, and often on-stage). They hold auditions, find a drummer, wend their way through a dozen great cameos by actual musicians, arguments within the band, an a fantastic rock show. It’s clever, it’s funny, it brings in a great sense of nostalgia without just being the same-old-same-old, which is quite the feat. It currently has a 91% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The joys of this film are similar to the joys of a beloved (real) band’s reunion concert: watching decades of personal and musical history play out onstage…” -Gemma Wilson, Seattle Times
“Proust had a go at describing a reunion like this – a party where people seemed to have got on a bit — but he didn’t give it half as much welly as Spinal Tap. It’s a triumph. You can just tell these guys go way back.” -David Sexton, New Statesman
“It’s funny and a wee bit poignant, and the main trio has the good taste not to ask us to feel too deeply about three guys whose chief appeal is that they’re miserable and petty and witheringly sarcastic and don’t try to hide it.” -Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.com
“A heart-on-its-sleeve, inoffensive, and amusing sequel about the legacies we run away from only to come crashing back into them in middle or later age.” -Ryan Lattanzio, IndieWire
“The band may be forever banned from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but in a way, this late-career concert proves a far better tribute.” -Peter Debruge, Variety
“Spinal Tap II: The End Continues may not reach the impossible heights of its predecessor, but it doesn’t need to. This is a tender, moving and actually quite funny sequel. Yes, I’m just as shocked as you.” -Linda Marric, HeyUGuys
“Holds onto the real sense that these men, despite everything they’ve been through, have loved each other almost their entire lives… There’s something beautiful about the fact that they’ve found their way to this moment, after so many decades.” -Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence
“It’s great fun to get a reprise of “Listen to the Flower People,” and yes, Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) is still captivated by the possibilities of music technology. I hope the end does continue forever. Rock on, Nigel, David, and Derek, rock on!” -Nell Minow, Movie Mom
“The band are back together as grizzled rockers 40 years later, and they’re still turning it up to 11.” -Christina Newland, iNews.co.uk
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will begin at The Clyde on Friday, October 10, and play Friday, Saturday, Sunday, & Monday at 7:30.
