Set on a New England island in the mid-’60s, this story of young love and loneliness is one of Wes Anderson’s best films. All of the child actors are brilliant in their roles, and the adult cast includes Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, and Tilda Swinton. Unhappy in their home lives, 12 year olds Sam and Suzy run away to live in the wilderness together. They manage for a while, before they’re found by Sam’s scouting troop and the local police. A massive storm that strikes the island shortly there-after gives them another opportunity to live a life they love. It has a 93% Tomatometer and an 86% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Wes Anderson often gets (unfairly) pigeonholed as a one-note whimsy machine, but he proves he is so much more in the brilliant Moonrise Kingdom, where we see his habitual sweetness offset with somberness.” -Chase Hutchinson, The Stranger
“Charming, enveloping, seriously funny, and beautiful.” -Carmen Rios, Autostraddle
“Anderson never loses his core themes – young love, the need to escape, the bind and bluster of family. His ‘Kingdom’ may not be large, but it is perfectly appointed.” -Tom Long, Detroit News
“Phonies may complain that Anderson’s island of misfit toys is a retreat from the real world, but for pure-hearted adventurers who share the secret map, “Moonrise Kingdom” is a joy that cannot be eclipsed.” -Joe Williams, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
“Anderson and his actors are able to convey more genuine feeling through these devices than most filmmakers can with more-traditional means.” -Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic
“There’s no denying the extravagant pleasures Moonrise Kingdom affords as an erudite wish-fulfillment fantasy of empowerment and autonomy.” -Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
“Hayward and Gilman are newcomers who are asked to carry much of the film and pull it off with lovely understatement and extraordinary believability.” -Charlie McCollum, San Jose Mercury News
Moonrise Kingdom breezes along with a beautifully coordinated admixture of droll humor, deadpan and slapstick.” – Manohla Dargis, New York Times
“It’s a fable about what it feels like to be 12 years old and afflicted, from head to toe, by a romantic crush the size of a planet.” -Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
“A true delight – a fun, clever, and, of course, whimsical tale about the days when love seemed worth running away from home over and getting a scout badge meant the world.” -Brian Tallerico, HollywoodChicago.com

Moonrise Kingdom will return to The Clyde Tuesday, July 15, and play Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday at 7:30.
