March 28-31 | Friday-Monday | 1 hour, 58 minutes | Rated PG-13 |
Steve Rogers may be living his best life in the past (from the end of Endgame), but Captain America is still needed. Anthony Mackie takes his first big-screen turn as Cap A, using his empathy and brains (along with Cap’s vibranium shield and his super-sharp wings) to cut through a conspiracy involving the newly-elected President Ross (Harrison Ford). There’s a villain out there mind-controlling soldiers (including a former super-soldier) to attack targets they otherwise wouldn’t, including the President himself, and the new Captain America has to stop the threat — even though he doesn’t have any superpowers. It’s a big fun punch-’em-up, but it’s also a twisty political thriller and shows that you don’t need to be able to hit super-hard to be a symbol for what is right and good.
First Assistant Director Michele Venetis (The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park, RoboCop, Galaxy Quest, and many more) will be at The Clyde Sunday and Monday to talk after the show about the production and about what it’s like to be an Assistant Director.
“The not-so-secret weapon this Captain America has going for it is Harrison Ford. Don’t believe the nay-sayers out there: Brave New World is a 21st century Tall Tale, and if it takes two viewings to take it all in, so be it” – Leonard Maltin, leonardmaltin.com
“A much needed strong and compelling entry into the [Marvel Cinematic Universe]. This is an exciting and thought-provoking chapter which fans of the MCU’s grounded, espionage-driven stories, as well as those interested in character-driven narratives, will find much to enjoy.” -Linda Marric, HeyUGuys
“[A] political thriller with something culturally resonant to say that exceeds mere comic-book particulars” -Katie Walsh, Tribune News Service
“The pleasures offered in Captain America: Brave New World are neither grand nor groundbreaking, but they’re consistent and earned.” -Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times
“In the end, Captain America: Brave New World is enjoyable enough for what it is: a proper introduction of Sam as Captain America.” -Dominic Baez, Seattle Times
“Pacy and punchy, this is a promising first official outing for the new Captain America” -Helen O’Hara, Empire Magazine
“[Ford’s] presence—along with a winning turn from Anthony Mackie as the patriotic title character—makes this adventure a sturdy return to franchise form.” – Nick Schager, The Daily Beast
“As excellent as Evans was as Cap, Mackie’s shown equal skill in crafting his own version of what that character should mean – in his case, weathering the pressures and politics of being a national symbol and being as adept with his words as his fists.” -Brian Truitt, USA Today
Captain America: Brave New World opens at The Clyde on Friday, March 28, and plays Friday, Saturday, and Monday at 7:30 — the Sunday 2:00 matinee will be the last one of the season.
