Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Probably September 20-23 | Friday-Monday | 1 hour, 44 minutes | Rated PG-13 |

violent content, macabre and bloody images, strong language, some suggestive material, and brief drug use

It’s a tale as old as time: rebellious daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) is embarrassed by over-protective mother Lydia (Winona Ryder) and her stories about the mistakes she made in her youth, and then makes the same mistakes herself. Except in this story, it involves a trickster spirit named Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), not a high school bad boy. A generation after people first learned not to say “Beetlejuice” three times, they have to learn some of the same lessons all over again, as the trickster makes life difficult for a whole host of folks, including three generations of Deetz women (including Lydia’s mother, played by Catherine O’Hara), his undead ex-wife (Monica Bellucci), and a ghost detective (Willem Defoe). It’s a crazy, kooky, funny, and weird film, with Tim Burton getting his strange groove back in directing it.

“A much better-executed and enjoyable film than it has any right to be, charmingly reverent and referential to the point that even its cliche story beats can be mostly excused” -Hannah Strong, Little White Lies
“Michael Keaton, barely ageing a day in his panda-eyed demonic get-up, if anything seems to have more energy than he did 35 years ago, bouncing off the purgatorial walls with hilarious gusto, lifting everything around him.” -John Nugent, Empire Magazine
“The zippy pacing, buoyant energy and steady stream of laugh-out-loud moments hint at the joy Burton appears to have found in revisiting this world, and for anyone who loved the first movie, it’s contagious.” -David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice feels like a return to old-style Tim Burton: this long overdue sequel is just as charming, fun, and morbidly deranged as the original.” -Serena Seghedoni, Loud and Clear Reviews
“Like in the first Beetlejuice, there is a genuine enjoyment gleaned from spending time in a world built by such serious craftsmen to such playful ends.” -Anna McKibbin, AV Club
“It’s unmistakably a return to joy for a legendary director, and that goes a long way in making this film stand out in a sea of ill-conceived sequels.” -Marshall Shaffer, The Playlist
“This sequel to Burton’s 1988 cracked pop masterpiece Beetlejuice doesn’t strive for greatness, or even your garden-variety over-the-top fantastical vision. Instead, Burton has just allowed himself to be silly and have fun.” -Stephanie Zacharek, TIME Magazine
“Burton has thrown everything at the wall and then carefully sculpted what has slithered down into a rollicking yet disciplined supernatural caper with a heart.” -Sophie Monks Kaufman, indieWire
“Burton has credited his Beetlejuice Beetlejuice experience with rekindling his love of filmmaking, and I think there’s something to that.” -Alexander Harrison, Screen Rant
“The nicest surprise is that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is that rare thing, a big-budget comedy which is actually funny.” -Nicholas Barber, BBC.com
“Suffice to say that nobody does death like Tim Burton, and it’s a pleasure to follow him back into the underworld. You’ll leave the cinema and return to the world of the living with a spring in your step and a smile on your face.” -Jo-Ann Titmarsh, London Evening Standard

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will probably open at The Clyde Friday, September 20, and play Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at 7:30.
