Probably Oct 30-Nov 2 | Friday-Monday | 2 hours, 12 minutes | Rated PG |
Jane Austen’s first novel contrasts the elder two Dashwood sisters in life and in love: Elinor is all prudence, Marianne all emotion. As they find love, lose it, and find it again, they each get a little bit of their sister’s defining characteristic as well, and end up the better for it. This interpretation is lovely and haunting, with the two leads showing beautiful sibling chemistry despite the contrasts in their characters. More of it takes place in the wild woods and heaths and less in the drawing rooms, giving the film more of a balance between staid society and the wilderness as well. It currently has an 88% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
We haven’t been able to confirm this booking yet, but hope we’ll be able to get it here. Also note that this will be the first weekend of 2:00 Sunday showtimes!
“[It] is a film you’ll want to snuggle up with, even when it hurts most—perhaps especially then.” -Peyton Robinson, RogerEbert.com
“It stands apart. Diehards might find fault with something or other, but, to quote the author, you’d have to possess a “most forbidding, disagreeable countenance” not to be charmed.” -Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Times
“Overall, Oakley finds a beautiful sense of place and a quiet happily-ever-after that feels entirely earned.” -Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times
“This lush, earthy and embodied version emphasizes the wild girlishness of the Dashwood sisters, bare-faced, hair unkempt, and the textures of the world they inhabit.” -Katie Walsh, Tribune News Service
“As the heart of the story, Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles have a beautiful, sisterly rapport, turning what can be stock character traits — Elinor’s “sense,” or prudence, and Marianne’s “sensibility,” or emotionality — into three-dimensionality.” -Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times
“Refreshingly, the new Sense and Sensibility isn’t a reconfiguration for the 21st century as much as an oak-solid, faithful envisioning made with sensitivity and a classical temperament.” -Ryan Lattanzio, IndieWire
“What makes the film a fresh, if not altogether revelatory, take on the material is the intimacy and sincerity with which it presents Elinor and Marianne’s parallel journeys.” -Derek Smith, Slant Magazine
“The bond between the two elder Dashwoods proves the film’s real love story, a tender, tumultuous sisterhood that both actors clearly treat as the main event.” -Anna Stafford, Little White Lies
“Georgia Oakley’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s timeless, beloved 1811 novel is enchanting and beautiful, just as it should be. It’s also, in its earthy and humorous way, intensely riveting, which is also as it should be.” -William Bibbiani, The Wrap
Sense and Sensibility will probably be coming to The Clyde on Friday, October 30, and probably plays Friday, Saturday, & Monday at 7:30 plus Sunday at 2:00.
