Ask E. Jean

June 9-11 | Tuesday-Thursday | 1 hour, 31 minutes | Rated Unrated |

discussion of sexual assault, language

The country knows E. Jean Carroll from her successful lawsuits against Donald Trump, but before that, she was Miss Cheerleader USA, a journalist, author, advice columnist, and a rather funny person. She wrote for the 12th Season of Saturday Night Live and was host of a TV series herself in the 1990s. This documentary tells the story of the high points of her life and the low points alike. What emerges is a portrait of a woman who spoke truth to power and wouldn’t back down when defamed by it. It currently has a 100% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Enthralling and unapologetic as its subject.” -Tomris Laffly, Variety
“Because this story is handled with a great amount of care, it balances eliciting a plethora of scoffs and laughter from its viewers, a perfect mirror of Carroll’s habit of countering conflict with comedy.” – Cortlyn Kelly, RogerEbert.com
“The film’s strength is in how it illustrates a cultural shift in attitudes toward women who make accusations against powerful men. As Carroll points out, progress is slow, and women still stay silent for many reasons.” -Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times
“Whether in voiceover snippets of her writing, clips of her mid-’90s talk show or interviews from the present, what shines through bright as day is her personality: curious, mischievous and candid, without pretense and also not without warmth.” -Angie Han, The Hollywood Reporter

Ask E. Jean opens at The Clyde on Tuesday, June 9, and plays Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:30.
