September 5-8 | Friday-Monday | 1 hour, 25 minutes | Rated PG-13 |
Sometimes, you find exactly the right people at exactly the right time to remake exactly the right movie. This is one of those times, with Liam Neeson stepping into the role of Frank Drebin (actually his son) that Leslie Nielsen made famous. Drebin is the best worst detective known to mankind, an absolute idiot who somehow gets the job done. There’s definitely a criminal plot that Drebin has to solve, but the real delight is in the skewering of everything and everyone involved, just 85 minutes of relentless comedy. And sometimes that’s just what you need.
“Fall-out-of-your-seat-and-roll-on-the-floor hilarious. See it with the biggest audience you can find. It might just heal you. It might just heal the world.” – Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine/Vulture
“The Naked Gun is an unadulterated good time, absolutely brimming with sight gags, one-liners and goofy humour. Only the most joyless would oppose its existence.” -Wenlei Ma, The Nightly (AU)
“The Naked Gun is funny. It’s very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very funny. Very.” -William Bibbiani, The Wrap
“The Naked Gun is cliched, dumb, and derivative. Which is to say that it’s pretty much perfect.” -Dan Friedman, Book & Film Globe
“In the thick of reboot culture, The Naked Gun is a prime example of filmmakers taking a nostalgic piece of cinema and making good on its legacy. It honours the humour above all, and you’d be hard-pushed to find a funnier film this year.” -Hanna Flint, Time Out
“Happily, The Naked Gun takes all the right jabs at widespread institutional failure while throwing another elbow at the people who are responsible for it.” -Coleman Spilde, Salon.com
“The world needs more comedies, and the sillier the better. The Naked Gun is happy to deliver plenty of chortles, along with some wild swings that are just slapsticky enough to work.” -David Sims, The Atlantic
“The Naked Gun understands the original, honours its tone, and delivers something that stands on its own. It is a perfectly cast, joyfully ridiculous, surprisingly effective return to one of comedy’s most delightfully nonsensical franchises.” -Linda Marric, HeyUGuys
“This movie has a secret weapon that makes it into a comedy killing machine: Liam Neeson.” -Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
“The Naked Gun is Liam Neeson’s best career move since Schindler’s List.” -Amy Nicholson, Los Angeles Times
“Nothing is sacred here and everything is up for humor, including the franchise itself and the jokes fly by so fast and so shamelessly that by the time you realize you didn’t like one, three funnier ones have appeared.” -Nell Minow, Movie Mom
“It’s a very, very funny film; so cheerful and light on its feet that it all but erases the outside world for 85 sparkling minutes, replacing it with a better one.” -Leaf Arbuthnot, New Statesman
“A fresh, fun and uproariously funny laugh riot that honors its source material and reinvents it for a whole new audience and generation. You’ll laugh until it hurts, and it’ll feel great.” -Adam Graham, Detroit News
The Naked Gun opens at The Clyde on Friday, September 5, and plays Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at 7:30.
