Rachel Zeigler and Gal Gadot headline this remake of the Disney classic, and while Gadot may have gotten some complaints about her acting (but not her spot-on look), Zeigler has drawn rave reviews for her presence and singing ability. Disney decided to make some updates to the story since 1937, including a handful of new songs, no glass coffin, a backstory for Snow White, an actual role for “Prince Charming” (now a Robin Hood-style bandit), and actual character growth for Snow White. But it’s far from all-new, and you’ll still see familiar story beats like the magic mirror, the huntsman, “Whistle While You Work,” the poison apple, and true love’s kiss. While some grumpy critics are panning it, many are quite happy, and I’m bashful to say that our booking agent (who sees a ton of movies and isn’t easily impressed) thought it was fantastic.
“In its own way, this one’s just as groundbreaking — the rare Disney princess movie where the princess gets to graduate to queen.” -Ty Burr, Washington Post
“A visually stunning, thematically rich adaptation that successfully modernises the classic tale. This is a fairy tale for a new generation—one that reminds us all of the power of courage, kindness, and believing in a better future.” -Linda Marric, HeyUGuys
“Above all else, it’s a charming fairy tale showcasing – and carefully updating – the original Disney princess.” -Jane Nelson, Radio Times
“For this reviewer, who once dreamed of being a princess like Snow White, I’ll forgo a true Brothers Grimm retelling if it means the right audience can get butts in theaters for this thoughtful and no less magical bite off the poisoned apple.” -Candice McMillan, Seattle Refined
“This Snow White, emerging in an era of government-sanctioned cruelty, seems to know exactly what it’s saying, even if it chooses to speak only in a discreet whisper. It’s the right Snow White for this moment.” -Stephanie Zacharek, TIME Magazine
“I watched it with a smile and a song, every bluddle-uddle-um-dum somehow injecting my heart with joy, often when I least expected.” -Sarah Michelle Fetters, MovieFreak.com
“It doesn’t always fit seamlessly together, but it’s far more entertaining than that might lead on. This is a spirited and sweet spin on classic material that deserves kudos for its balance of necessary updates and affection for the old ways.” -Kate Erbland, IndieWire
“the incandescent Zegler sells it with conviction and heart.” -David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
Snow White will open at The Clyde on Friday, April 18, and play Friday, Saturday, Sunday, & Monday at 7:30.
