After the Monday, November 11th, showing of Captain Phillips, Captain Kelley Sweeney will be on hand to enrich your experience. Like Captain Phillips, Sweeney holds the highest captain’s license a merchant mariner can achieve. He has worked on oil tankers, container ships, oceanographic ships, high-speed passenger vessels, large oil spill response vessels, fish processing ships, ocean-going tugboats, a dredge, a car carrier, and a crew boat. He too has dealt with armed intruders on a ship, and has even worked with the chief officer under Captain Phillips, Shane Murphy.
In addition to his career as a mariner, Captain Sweeney is also a columnist for the magazine Professional Mariner, and is the author of the book From The Bridge – a collection of personal stories of life in the modern merchant marine (on sale that night in our lobby at a special Clyde price). With his wife Frances, he also operates Maritime Headhunters, a maritime job placement and maritime career counseling company, from Greenbank.
We know Kelly, so you can expect a lively and interesting Q&A after the film on Monday.
