Years before Diane Fossey and Jane Goodall went into the wilds of Africa to study mammals, Anne Innis Dagg was in the field with giraffes. This documentary explores the life and career of one of the forgotten pioneers not just of female academia, but field research as a whole. Dr. Dagg herself narrates large portions of the film, which includes clips of 16mm film taken during her trips to Africa. It combines an indictment of the inequities in the academic system and a moving tribute to one of nature’s most awkward-looking and magnificent creatures. The film is currently rated 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 100% Audience Score (albeit on only a few reviews).
The Woman Who Loves Giraffes opens Tuesday, March 17, and plays at 7:30 Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.
