Rainier: A Beer Odyssey

If you were watching TV in the Puget Sound between 1974 and 1987, you likely saw one of the wacky, wild Rainier Beer ads lovingly parodying everything from Amadeus to pop songs to Sasquatch to the running of the bulls. This local documentary follows the team behind those ads, a collection of young ad writers, designers, and directors who were let loose to run wild on the local advertising landscape. There are also a heady collection of those unique ads included in the film, alongside interviews with surviving team members (the team at Heckler Bowker also did the original Starbucks logo). It’s been featured at both the Tacoma Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival.

There are so very few reviews of the movie, (they’re all local and complimentary), but there was a great KUOW story on it earlier this year.

“Regionally, Rainier: A Beer Odyssey feels specific and important. It’s full of fun nuggets about Seattle’s development and the culture of business in our beloved evergreen city.” -The Twin Geeks, TheTwinGeeks.com
Rainier: A Beer Odyssey Is a Film about Seattle’s Soul” -Eric Olson, Seattle Met
“Not only is it one of the best movies at this year’s Seattle International Film Festival, it’s one of the very best documentaries of 2024” -GetReelMovies.com

Rainier: A Beer Odyssey will open at The Clyde on Friday, December 13, and show Friday, Saturday, & Monday at 7:30, plus Sunday at 2:00.

Oh, my gosh, this looks spectacular. The ads with Mickey Rooney chasing the Wild Rainier through the forest are perhaps my favorite moments of TV from the ’70s, period. This movie looks like it was made for me. See ya December 14! 🙂

I have seen this at the Seattle Film festival and is it wonderful! Full of fun facts and memories from those ads. Heckler’s are long time family friends of mine! A fun and nostalgic journey you wont want to miss!
