One Life

Probably April 19-22 | Friday-Monday | 1 hour, 49 minutes | Rated PG-13 |

thematic material, smoking, and some language

You know a movie’s going to be an amazing tear-jerker when the trailer itself can get you tearing up without even showing the full shot. This trailer had me misty-eyed at the end, and from everything I’ve read, the film itself goes far above and beyond. Anthony Hopkins stars as a British man struggling with guilt over not doing more after he saved hundreds of Jewish children in Czechoslovakia from the Nazis, with Johnny Flynn as his younger self. Helena Bonham Carter also shines as the young man’s mother. It’s currently rated 90% Fresh with a 94% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Hanky, please, for the humanitarian the U.K. press dubbed the ‘British Schindler.'” -Thelma Adams, AARP Movies for Grownups
One Life tells a story that needed to be told and tells it impeccably.” -Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
“As we continue to grapple with today’s issues of war, refugee crisis and growing antisemitism, the film’s relevance is so troubling that you cannot fail to be moved by it.” -Rex Reed, Observer
One Life is a slow burn, slowly establishing Winton’s modest character as a younger and older man, but when it cracks open, it is a deeply moving portrait of true human goodness.” -Katie Walsh, Tribune News Service
“[T]he story is so inherently powerful and moving and there is so much goodness and decency at work it will set you off. Take a whole box of tissues if you want to play it safe and would rather not deploy your sleeve.” -Deborah Ross, The Spectator
“The film does justice to this overwhelmingly moving event in British public life in a quietly affecting drama.” -Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
“It certainly left me sobbing, and that’s a credit to Hopkins’ impeccable performance as well as Hawes’ sure-handed, straightforward direction.” -Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News
