The first film directed by a black woman to be featured in the Competition at Cannes, this Senegalese drama with real-world implications and a touch of magical realism not only competed — it won the Grand Prix. Ada is betrothed to the wealthy Omar, but meets and falls in love with the young construction worker Suleiman. But when Suleiman’s wages are withheld — along with the other workers on the construction site of a huge skyscraper in Dakar — he and several others decide to take to the sea to find a better place. He disappears, but signs begin to appear that perhaps he is not as dead as once thought. Rated 96% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Atlantics opens Tuesday, November 10, and plays Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 7:30.
