Annette Benning stars as a single mom in 1979 looking for role models for her teenage son (Lucas Jade Zumann). She settles on a punk photographer (Greta Gerwig), a mellow handyman (Billy Crudup), and her son’s best friend (Elle Fanning). These may not have been the best choices, but they’re the ones Benning’s character has. It’s a carefully, beautifully crafted film with strong performances, particularly by Benning, and comes out as an ode to feminism and the strength of women through hard times. Writer/director Mike Mills has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for his work on this film.
20th Century Women opens Tuesday, March 7, and plays Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 7:30.
